Immigrant Story Project: Experiment No. I

Jiajia Li

In 2021 I worked on a research project titled Immigrant Story Project (ISP) with my colleague Teresa Tam, conducting interviews with 8 immigrants in Calgary through a call-for-submission process. The project was intended to reflect on my own experience as a Chinese immigrant during the Covid-19 pandemic, and to learn from and connect with other immigrants through their individual stories.

Last summer I went back to China for the first time since 2019. I realized that the more years I spent in Canada and the more comfortable I got in my surroundings, the more distanced I felt from my original home. I was like a tourist documenting everything: the nature, the culture, the food, and people’s lives.

This soundscape work is my attempt to experiment with speech, field recordings, and technology. I especially wanted to thank Teresa Tam and four of the interviewees from ISP - Danny Loung, Saba Bidar, Hebert Poll Gutierrez, Xin Sun - for their contributions to this piece.
