Artist Bio

NUM is an avant-garde interdisciplinary duo founded in 2010 in the cultural tapestry of northern Iran by Maryam Sirvan and Milad Bagheri. Their artistic practice encompasses electroacoustic music, sound art, and multimedia performance/installation, leveraging digital signal processing and data manipulation to craft immersive audio-visual compositions. Over the years, NUM has gained global recognition, gracing festivals, art residencies, interdisciplinary projects, and exhibitions across West Asia, Europe, and Canada. In 2021, their creative journey brought them to Calgary, where they continue to contribute to the local music landscape with their innovative artistry.

Milad Bagheri, born in 1984, is an Iranian music technologist, sound artist, composer, and audio engineer currently residing in Calgary, Canada. He holds a Master of Music in Sonic Arts from the University of Calgary, a Bachelor of Arts in Music Technology from Tbilisi State Conservatory, and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Guilan University.

Bagheri's artistic focus is on designing hybrid interactive sonic arts systems that integrate multidisciplinary elements. His work has earned notable accolades, including the Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship (AGES), the ERASMUS scholarship, and the Radio Lab prize presented by The Wire and CTM festival. Within NUM, he serves as producer, composer, sound artist, and sound engineer.

Maryam Sirvan, born in 1986, is an Iranian sound artist, vocalist, and composer based in Calgary, Canada. She explores innovative realms by blending noise, processed voice, and electronics. Within NUM, Sirvan fulfills diverse roles, including composer, sound artist, vocalist, guitarist, and flautist. Her solo work includes three albums released on international record labels such as The Committee for Sonic Research (UK) and Past Inside the Present (US). Sirvan has received recognition, support, and commissions from prestigious organizations like Deutschlandfunk Kultur (Germany) and the Media Arts Committee (Canada).
