ARTIST BIOGRAPHY: 

Bruce Thomas Miller is Anishinabe registered status from Matachewan First Nation. 43 years of age and raised in rural communities (off reserve) in Northern Ontario, from Foleyet, Hornepayne to Timmins, where he lived most of his youth. 20 years ago, he attended Cambrian College in the Theater Production Program receiving his diploma. He then had an opportunity to attend Vancouver Film School in their Film Production program, to which he also received a diploma. Bruce then moved to Toronto to try and establish a career in the arts but support was not there for aspiring Indigenous artists, so he moved back to Vancouver. Eventually, Bruce moved to Calgary to work on the front lines of a homeless shelter. 14 years had passed and dealing with drug interventions, crisis situations, suicide interventions and mental health crisis’ had left him with PTSD from the years of front line work. He then found solace in his artistic side, his writing. He applied for ImagineNative short program and won the opportunity to film his short Conviction, about an Indigenous man just released from prison. He wrote, produced and directed the 13 min short film and it premiered at ImagineNative Film Festival this October, in Toronto, at the TIFF theater and in Red Nation FF, in Los Angeles and American Indian FF in San Francisco. He would like to continue to make poignant films about “real people” dealing with “real issues” that are happening in today’s society. He has currently been funded for Telus StoryHive Indigenous Storyteller 2022 Edition for his short fiction film “Skylar’s Comet” which he will direct, write and produce over the next year. He would also like to use his experience of front line work and give that unique perspective that he can only bring to the page and screen. He is passionate and dedicated in everything that he does and would like to showcase his talents in becoming the auteur filmmaker he wants to become.
