ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Kamika Bianca Guerra-Walker is of Jamaican and Chilean heritage, and hails from Calgary, Alberta.

As founder of mental health organization, The Walker Foundation, her insatiable passion lies in understanding people and helping people understand themselves. With a deep-rooted commitment to advancing mental health systems, Kamika embarked on a journey that led her from studying psychology at the University of Calgary to becoming an acclaimed emerging director.

Her films have garnered recognition for their ability to evoke empathy towards individuals grappling with mental illnesses, addictions, and homelessness. Her first short film Home is Where… sheds light on the stigmas surrounding the houseless population in Calgary found acclaim at short film festivals in Vienna and Dubai.

In 2021, Kamika joined a group of 19 other Canadian directors in the Netflix/FCF program Being Black in Canada. Her contribution, “Finding My Way Back to You,” toured black film festivals across the nation. Currently, Kamika is in the post-production phase for projects that have succeeded in funding and distribution through the esteemed Black Creators Edition program presented by Telus, Storyhive, and The Black Screen Office. “Phenomenal Women of YYC”, “The Black Mustard Seeds,” and the sequel, “The Black Mustard Trees,” are slated for release on TELUS Optik TV in  2023.

As one of eight Canadians, Kamika is also engrossed in her professional development as a participant of the second cohort of the 2023/24 Executive Residency Program presented by the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television. She plans to focus on fine-tuning her skills and exploring the life of an artist in the Artist-in-Residence Program presented by the Residence Inn by Marriott Calgary Downtown/Beltline District. Kamika is currently in late development for her feature documentary, Finding My Way Back to You, which invites her audience to Jamaica to find her way back to her father, giving him the screen to speak his truth on living with schizophrenia.

Kamika’s ultimate aspiration is to continue blending narrative and documentary to ignite societal change and inspire individuals to always approach life with compassion as their leading principle, triumphing over their human instinctive judgment.
