By creating an intimate space where stories are told, dreams are formed and curiosity is explored, I use make believe to tell ambiguous narratives where I can indulge in magic and make something out of nothing like a potion or an imaginary friend. Spaces such as these are created and claimed. There is a sense of ownership and control in which the creator decides what is real, what is not real, what is make believe and what is magic, then offering it to the viewer so they can project their own meanings and form their own stories from the experience.
Rachel Zwambag was born in and currently resides in Calgary. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art from the Alberta College of Art & Design. Her practice explores her relationship to play and the way magic can be made. Transformations, playing dress up, cloaking, masks, fairytales, story-telling, secret spaces and curiosity all play important roles in her work, manifesting itself through installations and objects.
