Based on a film by Adam Elliot
Directed by Stafford Arima
Based on an Australian claymation film about two unlikely pen pals, which screened in 2009 at the Calgary International Film Festival, Mary and Max is a hilarious and heartening tale that proves friendship can be found in the most unexpected of places. Join lonely 10-year-old Mary from Melbourne as she writes her way into the life of Max, a 44-year-old man with Asperger’s Syndrome in New York City. With quirky melodies and heartfelt dialogue, their friendship is one you’ll never forget.
I love musicals – especially original works that have never been seen before! Mary and Max is a story of unpredictable friendship, self-awareness, and happy accidents. This new musical brings a smile to my face and warms my heart.- Stafford Arima

Located on the south-east corner of Arts Commons, the traditional style of the Max Bell theatre breathes elegance, and is home to one of Calgary’s foremost theatre companies, Theatre Calgary.
A proscenium theatre, Max Bell Theatre has wrap-around seating on three levels and is versatile in scope through its adjustable seating and staging features. Moveable hinged box seats on both sides of the auditorium near the stage can be angled toward centre stage, left flat against the side walls or positioned somewhere in between creating a proscenium opening which can be adjusted from 35 to 75 feet in width. In 2016, Max Bell Theatre received a major face-lift, with all of its seats replaced, and a new paint job throughout. The audio systems in the theatre were upgraded from analog, to state-of-the-art digital in 2014, and today it remains at the top of industry standard for theatres in Canada.
