Arts Commons Presents
WUNDERKAMMER (Cabinet of Curiosities)
Location: Lightbox Studio (Beside the Martha Cohen Theatre)
Dates: March 9 - TBD
Artist Reception: Postponed
WUNDERKAMMER (Cabinet of Curiosities) is an opportunity to view the working process of Calgary artist Gillian McCarron. The space of the Lightbox studio will display preparatory studies and finished works of her new series of paintings that explore the acts of seeing and looking. She investigates this theme through the careful selection of materials and by experimenting with the concepts of opacity, pattern, depth, and surface.
Distinct layers of acrylic paint form shifting patterns and images. A base layer incorporates shimmering pigments and a fine network of dots is painted over top. The combination of materials is chosen for the way they interact differently with each other depending on light and viewing angle. From further distances, the dots visually merge together to reveal an image that fractures again as the viewer gets closer to the canvas. The sheen of colour from the base layer can only be seen from certain angles. In these ways, the materials influence the way the painting can be perceived.
The paintings encourage viewers to take a different physical perspective and move around the images to see the different effects. Each person will also apply their own curiosities and perspectives of the world to the work, which opens up further readings of the paintings. Different interpretations are possible and new discoveries can be made each time.
Observe Gillian’s work in progress and watch as she experiments with new ideas for her paintings throughout the exhibition. WUNDERKAMMER (Cabinet of Curiosities) runs from March 9th-April 26th 2020.
