The discovery of an early hominid ancestor in 2008 by paleoanthropologist and National Geographic Explorer Lee Berger helped clarify and complicate the origins of modern humanity. Lee is back in the headlines with an even more monumental find — a new species in South Africa that made tools, art, and even buried its dead.
