Johann Zietsman, President and CEO of Arts Commons, accepts role of President and CEO at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, in Miami, Florida

CALGARY – Arts Commons announced today that Johann Zietsman, President and CEO, will depart from the organization on December 21, 2018, for a new opportunity at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, located in Miami, Florida. Chief Financial Officer, Colleen Dickson (internal operations), and Chief Development Officer, Greg Epton (external relations), will be leading as co-interim CEOs until the new year, when a new President and CEO is hired.

Mr. Zietsman said, “After 9 happy years in Calgary, this was a very difficult decision for me and my wife. We love Calgary, and I love Arts Commons and my Arts Commons family. We became Canadian citizens in 2015, and thought we would retire here. But this is an opportunity I could not pass up for both myself and my family.” (Mr. Zietsman’s children and grandchild live in New York.) “The opportunity to lead one of the largest Performing Arts Centres in North America is both an honour and an exciting challenge.” The Adrienne Arsht Center opened in 2006 and has an operating budget of $40.2M (2016-17). The Arts Commons operating budget is $12.3M (2016-17).

Scott Hutcheson, Chair of the Board, said, “While I am professionally very excited for Johann's bright future, on a more personal level this city will lose one of its most talented leaders. I am certain that Johann and Tharrie will add immediate value to the city of Miami, and on behalf of the Arts Commons Board, I would like to wish the Zietsmans every success in the world.”

Henry Sykes, former Chair of the Board (2012-2017) added, “I, along with the entire Arts Commons family, will miss Johann and Tharrie. Fortunately, Johann has left us with both a clear strategy and direction for the future, as well as a strong financial position and excellent management and staff to ensure that Arts Commons continues to expand its place in the community.”

Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi said, “As a former Chair of Arts Commons, I know the catalytic role that organization plays in our city. Johann was exactly the right leader at exactly the right time. I will miss him and Tharrie deeply but am so grateful for their service and wish them all the best. And when they tire of snakes, and bugs, and humidity, they will always have a home in Calgary!”
