Arts Commons Presents:
20 Feet from Lisa Fischer, Rock n Roll’s most expansive star
CALGARY – Lisa Fischer is one of the greatest vocal talents to ever stand just behind the spotlight – until now.
On April 26, 2018, Arts Commons Presents GRAMMY Award winning jazz vocalist Ms. Lisa Fischer with her band Grand Baton at the Jack Singer Concert Hall.
For the unfamiliar, Fischer spent the last few decades singing backup for an avalanche of music legends, including Luther Vandross, Tina Turner, Sting, Nine Inch Nails, Chaka Khan, Alicia Keys and – most notably – the Rolling Stones. She’s been part of every tour with the Stones since 1989, and Mick Jagger has said his favourite part of the night is bringing Fischer out for a jaw-dropping duet of Gimme Shelter.
Fischer has only ever released one solo album, in 1991. Her breakout ballad, How Can I Ease The Pain, tied with Patti LaBelle’s Burnin’ for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the Grammy Awards that year. Ironically, Fischer was also on Burnin’ – she sang backup.
She gained mainstream fame after being featured in the 2013 documentary about backup singers, 20 Feet From Stardom. Unlike many of the interviewed musicians, Fischer came across as reluctant to become a front-woman to a band.
But now, for the first time, Fischer leads her own band, Grand Baton, performing original songs and greatest hits from her career – reimagined in her unique, psychedelic style.
