Arts Commons Presents:
Amplify Cabaret: We Gon Be Alright
CALGARY – Join Arts Commons Presents for an evening that brings those in the margins of the Black community centre stage with We Gon Be Alright on Friday, February 21 & Saturday, February 22 in the Engineered Air Theatre.
Hosted and curated by artistic activist and spoken word artist, Mel Vee, We Gon Be Alright works to invert the dialogue so often associated with Black History Month; taking it from reverence to a present grounded in agency and action. Including spoken word, dance, music, and poetry, We Gon Be Alright focuses on the power and perspectives of queer black women and queer black non-binary folks by gathering some of the most unique and exciting up-and-coming voices in Calgary.
“As Black artists, we give vivid colour, nuance and justice to experiences far too often kept in the shadows,” says Mel Vee. “Too often Black lives, and therefore stories, are disrespected, denied and ignored in society. Continuing legacies of anti-Black racism limit the breadth of expression of Black lives and experiences.”
We Gon Be Alright features performances by: aloT of Poetry, DeVery Bess, Sabrina Naz-Comanescu, Tola Dee, and Indigo Rose.
