CALGARY – After an international search led by Arts Consulting Group, Arts Commons board of directors has appointed Alex Sarian as its new President and Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Sarian comes to us from Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York, NY where he held several leadership roles over the last seven years, most recently serving as the senior executive responsible for the institution’s portfolio of arts education, community engagement, grant-making, and youth & family programming. Prior to his time at Lincoln Center, Mr. Sarian served as the Director of Education of the award-winning, off-Broadway MCC Theater, where he had the pleasure of working with a roster of acclaimed artists, including Theatre Calgary’s Artistic Director, Stafford Arima.

Mr. Sarian also has extensive experience as a management consultant to arts organizations, and as an adjunct professor at various universities and colleges in New York. While he has spent the majority of his career in the United States, and earlier years in Argentina, Mr. Sarian is originally from Toronto, ON, and is looking forward to returning to Canada.

“We are fortunate to have found someone of Alex Sarian’s character and experience to lead Arts Commons. He is a strong communicator with excellent leadership skills and a proven track record,” said Scott Hutcheson, Board Chair at Arts Commons.

“I am thrilled and humbled to join the Arts Commons community, to learn from my new colleagues, and to lead the third largest performing arts centre in Canada. Centres like Arts Commons are paramount to creating and maintaining a sense of civic and social vibrancy, and I look forward to continuing the great work being done to ensure that the arts play a role in the lives of all Calgarians,” said Sarian, after accepting the position.

“We are so excited to welcome Alex on board, to introduce him to our great city and community, and welcome him and his family into ours,” said Colleen Dickson, Chief Financial Officer and Interim Co-CEO.

Sarian is set to officially start in May, 2020, with Colleen Dickson, and Greg Epton, Chief Development Officer continuing to act as Interim Co-CEOs until that time.
