Arts Commons Presents: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in his own words
CALGARY – Connect with Black History Month this February with the strength and dignity of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. whose words remain as resonant and encouraging now as when he first delivered them.
We Shall Overcome: A Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. brings together Dr. King’s recorded speeches with a combination of powerful singers and genre-crossing musicians, performing the soundtrack of Dr. King’s life, through gospel, jazz, and the songs for Aretha Franklin, Billie Holiday, Stevie Wonder, and Nina Simone. This performance will also feature the newly formed Calgary Gospel Choir.
Through musical director Damien Sneed, who also worked as musical director for the Aretha Franklin Band, the production is infused with boundless energy and relevancy, sorely needed in turbulent times.
“The best part of this tour is how we will be able to touch the lives of so many different people through the lyrics and messages in the music," says Damien Sneed.
Don’t miss this powerful production on February 27, 2020, as part of the BD&P World Music Series. For more information, and to purchase tickets, please visit artscommons.ca.
